Summer Project Plans

Just a quick note on my summer project:
I will be in the Republic of Georgia in the summer and will be photographing my main project there. I am at the very beginning of planning, so not that sure about the form it will take yet. I am however very inspired by the style that Alec Soth used for his book 'Dog Days Bogota'. I might try to make it simlarly personal. Alec Soth adopted a little girl in Bogota and made a book for her; so that she would know the city of her birth when she grew up. Here is a link to an online version of the book: http://www.alecsoth.com/Bogota/pages/Bogota01.html

It would be great to hear your comments.

The lady vanishes

On saturday I had my first 4x5 portrait session in the Lamlash allottments with Gratiane's kind assistance.
The day before the shoot, we had a very amusing evening of trying to decipher how to operate the thing, which was in fact nothing like the 4x5 we used at Olly's. Instead it was a beautiful wooden box, with about 15 different levers and buttons. I am very curious to see how the photos will turn out. I noticed during the shoot, that if you loosen the buttons next to the lens, you can move it up and down and from side to side, which has the effect of shifting the focus onto different planes. Very strange. In one picture i could only get the face focused and nothing else!
These pictures are test shots with by new digital friend; the glorious 5D! What a beast.

The lady's name is Sylvia. She growns 16th century herbs and flowers in her allottment and is an expert on Tudor games and dances. She works at the Globe Theatre. I thought it would be fun to photograph her in her beautiful costume.
It is nice to see how lovingly she cares for and inspects all the plants in her plot - making sure that they are healthy. The little still-life is one of my new favorite flowers, which i discovered thanks to Sylvie. It is a 16th century plants called "Love in the Mist". And the flowers really do look like they are standing in mist when you have a lot of them together.

Elephant project: Gardens

After the sweet dream of finding some Voodoo in the area and a slight detour through the world of crazy fortune-tellers, fairy-seekers and spiritualists - I have found a project that I am very happy with: photographing the allotted gardens in the Haygate estates. I think it is interesting how this uniform space is cared for or disregarded. There is potential for an almost ethnographic study of the use of space. At the same time the gardens offer an insight into the character of the different tenants.
Here are some test shots that I took with my digital.
The final work will be shot on 6x6 to match the square format of the gardens. I want to print it pretty big - Sam T. suggested 1 foot x 1 foot - and I kind of like that.

upload attempt number 500: online pearls

THE PEARLY KING OF PECKHAM ... and his family:

The long battle is over - I have won. I have managed to wrestle my computer into uploading some images, at last. Haleluja!

So here is a small selection of the series: "The Pearly King of Peckham ... and his family" from my final project for the first term.
